Creating Lion Designs
Start with a generalized shape. Divide a circle into three segments. Rough in the general body shape within one of the segments. Parts of the legs hang into the neighboring segment, so when it’s rotated in a circle, the legs in one segment will weave with legs in the next segment.
Rotate the test design to see how it looks overall. The far back legs, in red in the left image above, show some potential for weaving together if they’re drawn a little longer. In the version on the right, those legs are longer. Other body parts have adequate space and don’t have any difficult overlaps, so this sketch works for the final design.
